How to Use the Undo and Redo Commands?

I cannot even recount that how many times the undo and redo shortcuts have saved my life. These are one hell of a gem and have been a life savior, at least for me. Since you have landed here then you might be interested to know how to use the undo and redo commands, right.

So, this article will tell you how to use the undo and redo commands along with step by step guide.

So, without wasting any time further, let’s dive deep into this and explore. So, let’s get started:

 

How to undo and redo?

 

 

Okay, you want to take a step back or two, you can easily do that using an undo command. But the key point to take a note is that this is entirely controlled by the software on which you are trying to apply the undo commands. Some of them allow multiple undo’s while some of them allow a single one. For example, MS paint allows a single undo while in Adobe Illustrator you can perform multiple undo operations.

So, in this section,  we will see how to undo and redo in some of the major softwares.

We will first go to MS office. How to undo and redo in MS office? So, let’s get started:

Step #1: First of all, you are required to open MS Word on your system. We are taking MS Word for illustration purposes; you can go with any of its products. Once you have opened MS Word, then you now need to move on to the next steps for further proceedings.

Step #2: Perform any action to an existing Word document or a blank document. After that, if you wish to undo your operation then press “CTRL + z.” This will revert your changes.

Additionally, if you want to redo an action then you are required to press “CTRL + y.” This way you can quickly perform the redo operation in Word.

Alternatively, in previous versions of MS Office, you may find the edit option from which you can also perform the same task by clicking on the undo and redo options.

Let’s see how it can be done in MS paint.

Step #1: First of all, you will have to launch MS Paint on your system. Once you have done that, open the desired image file, or you can even create something of your own.

Step #2: Oh, you made a mistake and wanted to undo the action. Press “CTRL + Z” to get back a step back. If you want the redo the step then just press “CTRL + Y” to get the needful results.

Moving on, we will see how to redo and undo in Adobe Photoshop. So, let’s get started:

Step #1: Open Adobe Photoshop on your system. Once launched, you are now required to open any existing project on which you want to perform these actions.

Step #2: Now, if you want to undo or redo your steps, you have two options, either you can go with the usual “CTRL + Z” keyboard shortcut which will get you exactly one step back, or you can go to edit option and then select the appropriate option from there.

Alternatively, to undo your steps, you can also go to the history section of Photoshop from where you can also see what steps you have gone through till now. To go to history, you need to click on the Window option from the top navigation menu and the locate the history option. Once found, you need to click on it. This may open a history panel from the right side from where you have a look at your steps.

Now, if you wish you can select the desired steps that you want to undo and then delete them by clicking on the dustbin like icon as shown. This will produce the same output as the undo command, but the difference is that you can revert as many steps as available.

To say the least, CTRL + Z and CTRL + Y are the undo and redo global actions for any Windows program. So, what if we want to perform the redo and undo operations on a Mac? If you are thinking about the same, then the following section is a must visit for you.

In Mac operating system, the alternative for CTRL + Z is “Command + Z” and for the redo operation the alternative is “Command + Shift + Z.” The Command key in Mac is equivalent to the CTRL command in Windows.

Also take a note that not every action your perform can be redone and undone. So, if these keys don’t work in some cases, then you might have performed those actions.

  • CTRL + ALT + DEL: Referred to as “Three finger salute” often used to interrupt a function. It provides a bunch of options like task manager, log off and others.

While you won’t have to go traipsing around the registry in order to implement this technique – I already did that – you may be curious as to where the CLSID came from. Essentially, a CLSID key is a part of the registry that contains code that provides access to specific system objects in the operating system, such as system folders. The CLSID keys can be found in two places in the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID.

Now, under normal circumstances, you would never need to use a CLSID because it is specifically designed to be used by developers and the operating system. In fact, a CLSID is a 128 bit Hexadecimal number enclosed in braces, so it’s not very user friendly.

The shortcut

To use the CLSID to launch the Apps screen, you’ll use the Shell command. In order to launch a Shell command from a shortcut, you need to use the explorer.exe command. Also keep in mind that there is only one space in the whole command line between the .exe file extension and the word shell.)

To create the shortcut, just open the Documents folder, right-click on the background, and choose the New | Shortcut command. When you see the first screen in the Create Shortcut wizard, type the shortcut in the text box.

When you see the second screen in the Create Shortcut wizard, type a short name for your shortcut.To complete the wizard, just click Finish. As soon as you see the shortcut icon, right click on it and select the Properties command.

When you see the Properties dialog box, click the Change Icon button to open the Change Icon dialog box. By default the Change Icon dialog box displays the icons from the explorer.exe file. As you can see, none of the available icons are very exciting. However, if you click the Browse button, you can search for other files that contain icons.

Once your custom Start button appears on the taskbar, drag it all the way to the left side of the taskbar. So here you are with what you want to have. So go on and enjoy “Windowing”!

But if you want to lock your Hard Drive partitions without any software then? In that case, Microsoft has provided one wonderful tool known as “BitLocker” in Windows Vista, 7 and 8 for encrypting your entire Hard Drive partitions. Using BitLocker you can lock any volume on the computer even the one you boot from. But a question arises in your mind that How to use it, right? So, I will show you two different modes to use BitLocker on your computer. If you wanted to Defrag the Hard Drive, you should see that.

Let’s see the first mode:

1. How to use BitLocker on a normal/data volume?

A simple way to enable BitLocker – right click on any volume and select “Turn BitLocker on” to start the locking process. After clicking a window will pop-up (as shown in the figure below) asking to enter a password to use with the drive – you will also ask to say a copy of the recovery key somewhere at safe place and then it will begin encrypting your drive.

By this method you can lock all the drives on your computer except “C:/ drive” or “Boot partition”.

Now, the second mode:

2. How to use BitLocker on Boot volume

Yes, it is true that you can encrypt the main operating system drive, but this has some special requirements since the drive has to be unlocked before boot. First of all this requires that Windows has a seperate boot partition that isn’t encrypted; in case if you don’t have then create a separate boot partition. The second requirement is that your system include a TPM (Trusted Platform Module).

If you try to encrypt your boot volume without satisfying the above to requirement then it will give an error as shown in the figure below.

So, in that case you will need to configure your system to use BitLocker with a TPM. Here is how you can do that.

  • Press [win + r] and type “gpedit.msc” in it and press enter to launch the Local Group Policy Editor

  • Now, browse to – “Computer Configuration > Administrator Templates > Windows Components > BitLocker Frive Encryption > Operating System Drives
  • In the right panel. double click the setting “Require additional authentication at startup” and select “Enabled”
  • In that please check the below options that “Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM…” is checked.

Now you will able to start the BitLocker process on your system drive, and will have the option to either enter a password on startup or insert a USB drive to boot.

  • Restart your system in order to configure the changes.
