Windows 8, more specifically in older windows there was a simple workaround for booting your computer into safe mode. All you had to press the F8 key on your keyboard.

Also, you can press the SHIFT button and then click on the restart icon, which is located on the lock screen to access recovery mode.

Is your Computer able to start and shows you the Login Screen

First, you need to check that if you can boot your computer, that means there is nothing that is preventing you from booting into Windows 8. That also applies to Windows 10.

All you need to Press the keyboard's SHIFT button and then click the Restart icon. It will take you to the troubleshooting options, from there you can start Windows 8 in safe mode.

Your PC does not Boot, and you have a bootable Media

For this, you need to create a USB recovery drive, then use it to get into Recovery options and finally use it to boot your computer in Safe mode.

Also, just in case if you have Windows 8 or newer installation disc or USB drive, you can use that it to boot temporarily into safe mode.

If You cannot Boot to the Login Screen

When your computer is not booting to the login screen, the chance is high that you'll be presented with the Recovery screen.

Sometimes, it does not happen automatically; you need to press and Hold the SHIFT button and hitting the F8 button rapidly. This will sometimes work to boot your computer in the ‘recovery mode', where you can use the Advanced recovery options.

The new Computers don't allow you to do this directly.

Use the Advanced Troubleshooting Tools to Enable Safe Mode

All right, once you hit the troubleshooting screen, by either using the SHIFT + Restart method, keep pressing the F8 button, using an installation media, or coming through the advanced repair options. You'll see this screen, and from here you can troubleshoot your computer.

On the Troubleshoot Display, click or Tap on the Advanced Options.

Next, select the ‘Windows Startup Settings' option. You know at now there is no mention of Safe mode. However, in the next display, you can see it.

See the last line says ‘Enable Safe Mode,' the Last step is to hit the Restart button.

When your Computer reboots, you should be able to see the next screen from where you can choose the Safe Mode. Use the keyboard's arrow button to select an option.

Getting To Safe Mode From Within Windows 8 or 10

You can always use this option, but this requires you to boot into windows in the first place. If this fits your situation, that means you may want to troubleshoot your PC, rather than to fix a bricked windows.

Press the Win+R key, this will open the RUN box. Inside the box type MSConfig and hit enter impatiently.

In the next display, switch to the Boot tab, and tick the Safe Boot box, and choose minimally or others that suit you best. Read the next section to know about the other options.

You have some extra options to choose the type of Safe boot.

  • + Minimal stands for normal safe boot mode.
  • + Alternate Shell is more safe, and with command prompt.
  • + Network is a safe mode with networking.
  • + Active Directory possibility concern to repair a server that is a Domain Controller for your network.

After you choose the option that suits you the best, click either OK or Apply and when prompted make your Computer Restart.

If everything goes right, your Computer will boot directly to the safe mode and from there you can perform several tasks, that is all up to you, here we only limit yourself to guide you on how to start windows in safe mode. You should know what you are going to do then.

So this is it, now you can do several things like removing drivers and apps and change system settings.

Please note, that even if you restart your computer, you'll be again booted in Safe mode, to prevent this, press Win+R key and type MSConfig and disable the tick box that says Safe mode.

Then hit the ok button, now just a matter of restart your Computer will be booted into normal windows.

Boot your PC from the boot disk and you will see below image on your screen. On-screen, it asks if you want to select the first partition (Windows installed partition) then “1” is already selected, so just hit Enter.

Step 3:

The next screen will appear to choose the path to your registry. The default is fine don't need to change it, so just hit Enter.

Step 4:

Now, the screen will appear displaying Password reset and many other options, don't do anything because “1” is already selected so now also just hit Enter.

Step 5:

Here you will be prompted, whether you want to edit users or the registry. You want to edit user passwords, so hit Enter again.

Step 6:

Now, comes the main part and please don't hit enter again (Just Kidding). The screen will show usernames which are available on your PC, so you have to enter that username for which you want to reset Windows password and now you can hit enter.

Step 7:

The next screen will show some advanced options no need to worry because you have to blank the password by selecting the “1” option and that's probably been already selected so just hit enter and get reset Windows Password.

Step 8:

And now, you’ll have to save what you just did. So type an exclamation point to quit (or the “!” symbol), then type the letter “y” to save all your work. Now you can reboot your computer and of course, you will able to login into Windows without any problem.

  • Choose “Uninstall a program” from tag below “program” as shown in figure
  • The window will appear as shown in the figure below with all the programs listed. You can choose any of them (Unwanted) and by just clicking on them you can uninstall those programs.

2. Turn off windows components

There are plenty of windows features that we are not using. So it is advisable to remove them and keep our disks free. As mentioned above you can choose the control panel. Now select the program tab itself and you will have a window as shown in the figure below.

You can click on the option “Program and features”. You will be redirected to a new window. Here you have an option of “turn off windows features” on the left top corner of the window.

If you keep them on they keep using your temporary folder memory.

Some tips:

You can use .zip or .rar files to compress your data. That will save plenty of space for you. You can download WinZip and WinRar software. After installing them you can choose the files you want to have in .zip or .rar formate.

Press ctrl+right click on the selected file. This will redirect you to options pop up. Select add to the archive. Choose the format you want and click yes. That’s all.

Step 2: Only verify System Files are Corrupted, this option will not change any of the Windows 7 System Files.

Step 3: Scan and repair Windows 7 System Files, note that this option will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to its default state. So, it's better to take the backup of System Files.

In the Command Prompt, type “sfc /scannow” and press Enter.

This will take some time, so keep patience. When the scan is complete you will see the below screen on your desktop and after that you can close command prompt.

Step 3:

Double-Click on the “localhost” to connect hMailServer. A small dialog box will be opened asking the password. Enter your password which you specified during the installation of hMailServer and click on “OK”.

Step 4:

If the password is correct then you have successfully started hMailServer Administrator.

#) Domains & Accounts

Now you have to specify your domain name for which you have to setup hMailServer.

Step 5:

From the last opened window, click on “Add Domain” or you can also start “hMailAdmin again”.

Step 6:

Enter your specific domain. As example, I have inserted “technobol.com” and click on save.

Step 7:

Now, you have to specify your email address on which you will receive and send an email. For that, Expand the Domains node in the tree to the left.

Step 8:

Click on your given domain name and click on “Add Account”.

Step 9:

Now, enter “webmaster” or “info” or you can put any name as per your choice in the Address box, set the password and click Save.

Step 10:

Now, in the tree to the left, you will find your Account and Address both.

#) Specifying the public hostname and SMTP relayer

For the working of hMailServer, you have to specify the public hostname.

Step 11:

From opened Window or start hMailAdmin and in the tree to the left, go to Settings > Protocols > click on SMTP

Step 12:

From the right-hand side click on Delivery of the e-mail tab. Into that, under the hostname enter the public hostname of the computer where hMailServer is running and click on Save.

Step 13:

Now, you have to specify SMTP relayer, so enter the hostname of your ISP's email server, along with your credentials on that server in case it demands authentication and click on save.

Step 14:

You have successfully setup hMailServer and now you can use it.

Step 7: In the right panel of 1033, replace the “Welcome” text with your own text which you want to display while logging on in Windows 7 at both “1002” and “1005” locations (Ex: HELLO TECHNOBOL) and then click on “Compile Script“.

Step 8: Click on “File” and “Save“, then close Resource Hacker.

Step 9: Now, copy this modified winlogon.exe.mui file from the desktop and paste into My Computer > C: (system drive) > Windows > System 32 > en US > winlogon.exe.mui, it will ask for confirmation click Copy and Replace.

Step 10: Open Command Prompt (Win + R and type cmd) and type “mcbuilder“, press Enter and then close the command prompt.

Step 11: Restart the computer and log in to see the changes made. Hurray! You have Changed the “Welcome” Text Message at Log On in Windows 7.
