How To Locate, Edit Hosts File In Windows 7

Published

on

Vienna (CodeName), popular in the computer world by the name of the Windows 7 operating system, is manufactured by the technology giant Microsoft and has many programs and features. One such feature embedded deep within the Windows OS is the windows hosts file. If you don’t know the installed version of Windows, here is how to determine Windows version.

Now while the name may sound big and techy, the fact of the matter is that the concept of host file was in existence long before the evolution of this modern era INTERNET; and remains in use to date.

It is necessary to understand the concept of Hosts Files because it might be a backdoor entry for the high jackers or malicious software since this file can be easily modified. These malicious software’s are generally used to redirect the traffic to a not so intended to visit the website. Also, we can easily eradicate the problem by just deleting those redirected entries from the windows hosts file.

Moreover, we can easily block any website which we do not want to open in our system. So, knowing the concept of hosts files has it’s perks. Additionally, you can easily boast around your friends by blocking any website in their system. Ain’t it great?

So, let’s dig a little deeper into this and explore the concept of the windows hosts file.

What Is A Hosts File?

The Hosts File is a plain text file used by an operating system in order to map Hostnames to IP Addresses. In simpler words, a Hosts file defines the relationship between Domain names and IP addresses, that is which domain name is linked to which IP address.

The host’s file is in existence from the time of ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the predecessor of the INTERNET. The host’s file is like an address book or a directory.

What Purpose Hosts Files are Used For?

The Hosts File system facilitates the user by serving the facility of translating human-friendly hostnames like www.google.com into numeric type addresses, commonly known as IP addresses.

Hosts files can be used for blocking unwanted ads, 3rd party cookies, and hijackers. This can be easily accomplished by blocking those connections that serve as the source for the same.

How To Locate Hosts File?

In order to locate the Hosts File in Windows 7, simply follow the following easy going steps:

Step 1 : Click on Start -> Type Notepad -> Right-click on the Notepad shortcut  -> Click on Run as Administrator.

Step 2: Once Notepad is opened, click on file ->  open  -> then browse to the mentioned location, that is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Step 3: In order to get the desired hosts file, do not forget to change the option of text documents (*.txt) to All Files (*.*) positioned at extreme right corner (bottom)

click all files

Step 4: Finally, Double click the file named hosts in order to open it and whoa, you made it.

Alternative Method

Type in the following command in RUN (Windows + R).

notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

How to edit hosts file?

In order to edit the hosts file, just follow till 3rd step as mentioned above after that do the following:

Step 1: Copy the host’s file and paste it somewhere else and make the changes you want to make in the copied file only.[Recommended and Important]

Step 2: After making the desired changes, replace it back in the C :\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder.

How to block websites by editing hosts file?

If you want to block certain websites then you can easily attain that milestone by editing your host’s file.

For instance here, we have taken the example of www.myexamplesite.com.
Just add the following line in the host’s file replacing www.myexamplesite.com to your desired site name. 127.0.0.1 www.myexamplesite.com

you can block as many sites as you want just by adding them in the host’s file in the mentioned manner.

How does it work?

(127.0.0.1) This IP address is the universal IP address that is assigned to the localhost of the user ’s computer.

When the user will navigate to www.myexamplesite.com through a web browser, the computer will try to connect to itself because 127.0.0.1 is the IP address of the machine’s localhost and the machine probably would not find a web server running on itself ultimately resulting in failure and this way the blocked website will not open in the system.

Disclaimer: You might end up losing the original hosts file. So, better be careful.
Administrator rights of the system are required to do the needful. So, make sure that you have the administrative rights of the system.
Always back up the files before experimenting.

We hope that this article will definitely add some worthwhile value to your knowledge base and if you have any doubts or queries regarding windows 7 host files, do let us know through the comment section down below and stay tuned for more such How To’s. If your windows 7 PC is taking time in the startup process, you should minimize the startup program. Here is how to change startup Programs in Windows 7.

PCs. They are all around us. In fact, the modern world is hard to imagine without computers. One of the problems of this though is the fact that everyone now has a digital footprint and soft copies of various documents.

Now, these documents are often something entirely personal that if fallen into wrong hands can cause a lot of trouble for you. So what does one do then to protect themselves from such an unfortunate turn of events? One of the safest and preliminary measures to take is to hide important files.

While hiding files can be easy enough, sometimes we lose track of what we have hidden or need to access it for something? What does one do then? Well, unhide the files of course! So, today we are going to show you guys how to show hidden files on Mac. Apart from hiding the files, you can lock the folder on the mac using a Password or passcode. Here is how to Protect folder in Mac.

How-to-Show-Hidden-Files-on-Mac

Now learning how to find hidden files on Mac can be a bit tricky. There are quite a few ways out there and a whole bunch of third-party software to help you achieve it as well. However, most of them are geared for Windows users. So today’s article is dedicated to teaching you guys on Apple’s side of the pond; how we can view hidden files, Mac.

Now we will not be using any third-party applications to show hidden folders mac primarily because of the security risk. Files that you want hidden obviously contain sensitive data and putting it in the hands of another software is a leap of faith many of you are unwilling to take.

But have no worries, we are here with the solution, it’s simple easy and most importantly entirely organic to Mac OS X Yosemite. Just a little warning, since we are dealing with code in here and the files are sensitive, be very careful of what you type in! With that said, let’s get this show on the road!

How to Show Hidden Files On Mac: The Easiest Method

Now I know I day say the easiest method but to make it actually easy there need to be two methods and not one! “Why?”, you ask! Well, that’s because if you have to see hidden files mac on a regular basis, it gets tedious by the first method. Hence the second method, a batch script designed specifically for those who need to show hidden files on Mac on a daily basis for some reason or the other.

#1. How to Show Hidden Files On Mac using the Terminal

There are not a lot of complicated steps or instructions here to follow so I’ll run through the steps really fast.

Step 1

Navigate to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.

Step 2

With Terminal opened, type in the following code snippet:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

Press return

Step 3

Now we got to relaunch Finder for the code above to do its magic! Hold the ‘Option/Alt’ key, and then click on the Finder icon in your dock and click on Relaunch.

Step 4

Once relaunched, you will ow be able to access all hidden files. To hide them again, follow the same steps but type this instead into the Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

And you’re done! However sometimes even doing this every time we need to show hidden files on Mac can become tedious. Hence our solution!

#2. How to Show Hidden Files On Mac using Terminal Aliases

Now we are going to wrap up all of those above steps into one easy to use Terminal Alias. What’s a Terminal Alias though? It’s actually a sort of wrapper that when invoked does a set of predetermined commands so that you get to save time and don’t have to commit long command lines to memory!

Step 1

Open the Terminal app like we did before. In Terminal, type the next line in

sudo nano ~/.bash_profile

If you are using a password, then you will be asked to enter it now. Once done, just hit enter and proceed to the next step

Step 2

The bash profile will be enabled and at the bottom of the open .bash_profile file, we are going to add the following lines:

alias showFiles='defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES; killall Finder /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app'

Step 3

Below that, we are going to add this bit of code

alias hideFiles='defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO; killall Finder /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app'

Step 4

Once done, press Ctrl + O and hit return to save the file. Then hit Ctrl + X to exit the file to come back to the command line

Step 5

When you’re back in the terminal write the following:

source ~/.bash_profile to refresh your profile and make the aliases available

Adding aliases to .bash_profile via Terminal

Now, whenever you want to show or hide files just type in the command, showFiles then hideFiles your job is done!

That leads us to the conclusion of this article! If you have any questions or queries, leave them in the comments below! If you wanted to hide apps on the iPhone, you can easily hide apps on iPhone. Along with apps, also see how to hide photos on iPhone.

Windows 7 Download

Many a time you would want to kill a process or a task that is not responding or has frozen. If you want to do so in windows 7 then you either require Task manager or command prompt.

So, in this article, we will tell you how to kill  process in Windows 7? either by using command prompt or task manager. Also, take a look at speeding up the Windows 7 process for better performance. So, let’s get started:

How to kill process in Windows 7?

Method 1: Using Task manager.

Step #1: As the first step you are required to open the task manager. In order to do so, you can either type of task manager at the start section. This will end up in results like “View running processes with Task Manager” and this is what we require. Make sure to click on it.

Alternatively, you can also make use of the keyboard shortcut key which includes pressing “Ctrl + Shift + Esc” simultaneously. Moreover, there is one other way with which you can open task manager and that goes as right-click on the taskbar and navigate for the option as “Start Task Manager”. Once found, you are now required to click on it in order to proceed further for the next step.

Step #2: Now, we assume that you just have followed the previous instruction and you now have the Task manager window opened in your screen. So, let’s move further. In this step, you are required to navigate for the “processes” tab. The “Processes” tab is usually positioned next to the “Applications” tab. Once you have found the “Processes” tab then you need to make a click on it.

Once you have done the required then you will have the list of processes that are currently running on your system. The list also includes the details about how much system resources the processes are using individually.

Now, the real work starts here. Though it’s a really easy one be cautious because you might end up killing a system process that can harm your system in some way or the other. So, be careful.

 kill-process-windows-7

So, in order to kill a process in Windows 7, all that you have to do is to select the process which you want to kill by clicking on it. The next you require is to click on the “End Process” button which is positioned at the right bottom corner of the window.

Moreover, the Task manager also facilitates the user by the facility of viewing the processes from all users. If you want to see those then you are required to click on the “Show Processes from all users”. This will open up the processes from all the users of your system. You can certainly give it a try as it will reveal more details about the processes.

Method 2: Using Command Prompt

kill-process-in-windows-7

This method has two sections. The first one includes viewing and identifying the problematic process with the help of Task Manager and the second one requires command prompt to kill the same. So, let’s get started with this method.

Identifying the Problematic Processes using Task Manager.

Step #1: In this step, you are required to open the task manager. In order to do so, you can either type task manager at the start section or you can also make use of the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + Shift + Esc” or you can open the task manager from the taskbar.

Step #2: Now if you have your Task manager open in front of you then you now have to navigate for the “Processes” tab. Once you have done the needful then you are required to look for the problematic processes and identify them. You need to take a note for the same in your mind because we will be requiring the name in the next section. If you have done the mentioned then you are all set to move to the next section.

Using Command Prompt to kill the process.

Since now you might be using Task manager only to kill the processes but it is not that efficient as the command prompt. You might have noticed that many times the task manager is not able to kill a frozen process. This is exactly where you should consider using the command prompt.

Step #1: Now if you have followed the steps from the previous section carefully then in this step, you have to open a command prompt. You can do so by either typing “command prompt” at the start section or “cmd” at the Run (Windows + R) section. This will open the command prompt for you.

Remember that the cmd should have administrator rights to kill the process. So, you can do so by choosing the option “Run as administrator” while opening up the command prompt.

Step #2: Now, we assume that you have the command prompt with administrative rights opened up in your screen. Now you are required to type the following command “taskkill /f /im” without quotes in the command prompt. Now once you have typed this command then you need to type the name of the problematic process which you have identified in the first section of this method with space.

So, it would look something like this taskkill /f /im “Chrome.exe”. Here Chrome.exe is the problematic process. Now, if you have typed all well then you now have to press enter.

Now, the moment you hit enters you will see messages like “…. Has been terminated”. This marks that you have killed the process and this is exactly what you require.
