How to Change File Extension?

Published

How-to-Change-File-Extension

What is a file extension??

A file extension is nothing but a string of characters that helps a computer to identify the type of file it is. According to the file extension, the computer assigns a software to deal with that file.

For instance, if a file is named as example.txt, the .txt file extension makes a computer understand that the file is text document and assign it a text opener. Every file holds different file extensions depending upon the data it contains.

But we can easily change the file extension following some easy steps. If you want to know how to change file extension, then read out the full guide, you will surely get to learn many things about dealing with file extensions.

But I would like to specify that changing the file extensions won’t change the type of data a file carries; it will just confuse the computer. Also, changing the file extension will make sense if and only if you know what you have to do with the changed file extensions.

Because changing the file extensions may cause unnecessary system errors. So you better play around the file extensions if you have a good reason to change the file extensions.

How To Change File Extension:

How to change a file type is no different than changing the file extensions. File type and file extensions are the same things just the names are different. In most of the windows, the file extensions are hidden by default.

To make changes in the file extensions, we need to make the file extension visible first, and then we can change it easily.

By making the file extensions visible and then changing is just the one method. The other method I’ll show you to change the file extension is by using almost all the software.

You might find everything confusing now but you’ll understand all by the end of the guide.

#Method 1

The first method is to navigate to the file you want to change the extension of. For instance, I have a file named Example on drive D on my computer, and I want to change its file extension. See the screenshot below.

How-to-change-file-extension

But I can’t change the extension of the example file unless I’m able to see the file extension it has. In most of the windows, file extensions come hidden by default. In order to change the file extensions, we need to first make the file extensions visible, then only we can change them.

So to make the file extensions visible, click on the start menu and go to the control panel. There on the control panel, you need to go to Appearance and Personalization and then Go to Folder Options.

Alternatively, you can directly search for it in the search bar of your start menu.

As sooner you will click on the “Folders Options”, a new pop window will open up. On the “Folders Options” window, Go to click on “view”. The window looks like the below screenshot.

 how-to-change-a-file-type

Under “Advanced Settings”, Scroll all the way down to “Hide extensions for known file types”. You will notice this option is checked(selected) by default, you need to un-check it in order to make the file extensions visible on the windows.

 how-to-change-a-file-type

Once you are done un-checking this option, click OK and come out of the folder options window. After doing all the appropriate settings, it’s time to go back to the file we wanted to change the extension of. The file now looks like the following screen.

what-is-a-file-extension

As you can see, the file was initially visible as only “Example” now it appears as “Example.txt”.

Now it’s time for us to change the file extensions “.txt” to “.jpg”. For this, right-click on the file and click on rename. The step is simple but still, a screenshot for this step is given below.

what-is-a-file-extension

Alternatively, you can also rename the file by clicking on the file name, below its icon. You need to do two clicks to change the name of the file. But make sure to have an interval of a few seconds between the clicks else the file will get opened instead of the name editor.

Okay, now replace the file extension with the desired name post the “.”, like the below screen.

what-is-a-file-extension

While changing the file extension, you may get the warning that changing the file extensions may cause the system errors or the file might not work properly, you can ignore this message if you are sure of what you are doing.

Note: In two cases, you might not change the file extension. First, when you don’t have admin authorities of your computer and second when the file is read-only. So, when you can’t change the file extension, you need to fix both these issues.

#Method 2

Another method I’m going to tell you is really easy to follow. Just a few steps and you are done. So the method works like this,

Double click and open a file you want to change the extension of. By just double-clicking a file, it gets open in its relevant program. For instance, if you double-click a text file, default it will get opened in an ms word or text document.

Now once the file is opened, just go to the File menu and click on Save as to save the file. In the Save as a window, you need to write the name of the file under File Name, it can be anything of your choice.

Under Save as type, select the file type you want your files to be in, as the following image and click Ok. The file extension would be changed. That’s it. Both methods function the same. You can use any one of them as per your suitability.

So, it’s time to wrap up my article. I am hoping that the article taught you successfully how to change the file extension. But before going any further, just keep in mind, changing the file extensions only make sense when you have the proper reason for doing it.

I hope the article was helpful to you. If it helped you learn how to change the file type, feel free to share it on your social platforms!

How To Delete Windows.old Folder?

Published

on

In order to learn how to delete windows.old folder, it’s important to know about windows.old first.

For those who are completely oblivious of what is windows.old folder, let me give a quick introduction to it!!

Have you ever upgraded your windows from windows 7 to windows 8, 8.1 or 10? I’m sure you have. We all do this by time to cope up with the upgraded technology and to get full benefits out of the new windows.

While upgrading windows, what you think where your old windows files go?? Do they get deleted, or replaced??

No matter if your answer is deleted or replaced, I’ll have to tell you that you are wrong!!

None of them happens to those files, neither they get deleted nor they get replaced by the newer version. Instead, all these files of your older windows get stored in the windows.old folder. And needless to say, this folder occupies a lot of space on your hard drive unnecessarily up to 20GB or more.

Windows.old folder, however, gets deleted itself within 28-30 days of the upgrading of the window but if you want to have full control over your computer and thinking can I delete windows.old, then my answer is YES!! You can delete windows.old folder very easily.

Although, deleting windows.old is not a tough job but you can’t just delete it just by right-clicking on it and then select the delete option like we do while deleting any other folder on the computer. In order to remove windows.old, you need to follow the below-given steps. Here’s how to do that.

How to delete windows.old

Windows.old folder contains all the important system files and installation programs of your previous windows to let you downgrade your windows if you are not happy with the upgraded one.

Therefore, think twice before heading to delete this folder. Without it, you can’t go back to your previous windows no matter how hard you try and this action can not be undone.

One more thing, be quick to decide if you want to downgrade your windows or not. Because of windows.old folder gets deleted by the newer Windows version within 30 days as I told you above.

Now without any further delay, let’s figure out how to remove windows.old. folder.

Step 1: – You can delete window.old file by performing disk cleanup. So to reach out to disk clean up wizard, click on the start menu and search for “Disk cleanup” in the search box.

How-To-Delete-Windows.old-Folder

Else, you can also launch a Disk clean up wizard by right-clicking the C drive on your computer. Then you need to go to the Properties, and then Disk Cleanup button under the General tab. Have a glance at the screenshot to understand it better.

Step 2: – The disk cleanup tool will take a few seconds to analyze the files to be deleted on your computer and will present them to you. Here, you don’t need to do anything.

Simply click the Cleanup system files button located on the bottom of the window. The screenshot is given below, take help of it if you can’t find the option.

How-To-Delete-Windows.old-Folder

Step 3: – Once the scanning is done, scroll all the way to down to find the “Previous Windows installation(s)” option under “Files to delete. That’s the windows.old folder we are trying to wipe out from our system.

Just move your cursor over the checkbox next to this option and press Ok to start the cleanup. In the case of any doubt, refer to the above screenshot!

Step 4: – In the confirmation dialogue, just click the delete file button and you are done.

That’s it!! Yes, the method is that simple!

In case, if you don’t want to use the inbuilt disk clean up tool, there are certainly many third-party tools available in the market like CCleaner which can be used for the same purpose.

The method to use such tools is also simple. Just download that tool from its official website, install it on your computer and scan for the deleted files.

When you get provided with the deletable files, just scroll down to find the Previous Windows installation(s) option. Mark, it checks and clicks on clean up to delete that folder.

The steps can vary a little from software to software but the method is almost the same for all the tools.

The third method you can use for deleting windows.old folder is the command prompt. The steps for this method are given below.

#Deleing window.old using command prompt:

However, you can easily delete that folder from the above two methods but some people like to play around the command prompt. So we are specifying the steps below specifically for you in case you want to delete windows.old folder using the command prompt.

Step 1. In order to open CMD, click on the start menu, and type CMD in the search box. On the top, you’ll see CMD under programs. Now right-click on it and select the option Run as administrator. Soon after, the command prompt will be launched.

Or simply press Ctrl+Shift+Enter keys while typing cmd in the search to open command press as an administrator directly.

Step 2. Once the command prompt is launched, type or copy-paste the following command there and press enter windows.old folder will be wiped out from your computer.

RD /S /Q %SystemDrive%\windows.old

All these methods perform the same tasks, you can use any one of them as per your convenience. I surmise you have got all your doubts clear regarding how to delete windows.old.

Windows.old folder is useful as long as you are not satisfied with the latest version of windows. But if you have tested the features of the new windows and have decided to keep these windows on your computer, its time to get rid of this folder and vacant space occupied unnecessarily.

But perform this action very carefully since you can’t revert it back.

So, it’s time for me to wrap up the guide here. If you are encountering any issue while following the steps, just hit your query in the comment box. And if you find the guide useful and worth sharing, go ahead!

You hate it! I know. Every time your computer goes into not responding mode, you just stay here cursing the computer. You don’t know how to make computer faster.

Don’t worry! I have got your back. In this article, you are going to find out the ways to speed up Windows 10 without spending even a single dime.

So without further ado, let’s get started.

How to Make Windows 10 Faster?

Microsoft Windows is the most popular computer operating system available today. The company has released multiple versions and Windows 10 is the latest above all.

Windows 10 running slow issue can occur due to many reasons. In this article, I will try to eliminate all the issues so that, you can have a speed boost at the end.

#1. Disk Cleanup Windows 10

The very first thing you should do is eliminating junk from your computer. If you don’t do so, unnecessary files of whopping size will occupy your drives.

Let me tell you how you can do it.

First, you have to open This PC. Choose a disk you want to clean up. Just right-click on it and choose properties. Alternatively, you can press Alt+ Enter as well.

Can you see a Disk cleanup button there? Clicking on the same will start analyzing your disk for junk and internet residual files.

The utility will present a result before it cleans up. So, you can always choose what to clean or what not to.

#2. Disable Startup Programs

If you are asking yourself how to make speed up my computer, stop right there! You can do a lot more than asking yourself.

One of the biggest reasons most of the computers go sluggish is a large number of startup programs. Microsoft has included a built-in option on the task manager interface to manage all your startup programs.

First, open Task Manager. You can do it by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing the appropriate option. The best way is hitting Ctrl+ Shift+ Esc.

how-to-make-windows-10-faster

Go to the startup tab. There you have it! You can disable the programs you rarely use. Make sure you don’t disable antivirus, graphics and audio drivers.

#3. Disable Animations and Visual Effects

Everyone loves to see some animations while opening new applications. But you know what? It adds extra weight to the performance that you can have a speed boost if you turn them off.

Follow the steps given below to optimize Windows 10 by turning off the performance-affecting visual effects.

Step 1: First, you have to open the system properties. Press Win key+ R to open Run dialogue box. Then, type sysdm.cpl and hit Enter. (The faster way)

Step 2: Go to the Advanced tab and hit the Settings button under Performance.

Step 3: If you want to solely improve the performance, you can choose to Adjust for best performance option.

I personally don’t like how the display turns out to be after selecting that option. So instead, you can disable the following options to get the maximum out of it.

  • Animate controls and elements inside windows
  • Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
  • Animations in the taskbar
  • Fade or slide menus into view
  • Fade or slide ToolTips into view
  • Fade out menu items after clicking
  • Show shadows under windows

I hope your quest to find how to make Windows 10 faster ends here.

#4. Disable Background Apps

Your Windows 10 computer runs almost all the universal apps from Microsoft in the background even though you don’t open them. Obviously, it will cost you more system resources causing you a considerable drop in the speed.

You know what? You can turn them off!

Hit Win key or click the start button. On the left side of the screen, you can see a gear icon. Hitting on the same will bring you to the Settings panel.

Click on Privacy and choose Background apps from the panel given to the left. You can see all the Windows 10 apps that have the potential to run in the background and transfer data.

optimize-windows-10

You can turn all the apps you don’t use. In my case, almost all the apps are unnecessary. If you regularly use the internet on your computer, you must disable those.

#5. Uninstall Applications You don’t Use

If you look at the list of applications installed on your computer, you will realize the fact that you don’t need many of them. No wonder you are searching for how to speed up Windows 10.

You must uninstall the applications you don’t use because they take up your space and badly affect the performance as well.

Click on the start button (or hit the Windows key) and search for Control Panel. Once you open it, look out for Programs and Features. As you click on it, you will get the complete list of programs installed on your computer.

Thoroughly go through the list to find out apps you don’t use at all. Maybe, there are some programs you installed for one-time use. Include those into your elimination list too.

Double-click on them to initiate the uninstallation process. There you go!

#6. Eliminate Bloatware from Your Computer

Sometimes adware and bloatware can be the biggest threats to your computer. Sometimes manufacturers inject such programs into your computer to promote their products.

You can optimize Windows 10 by getting rid of bloatware. Microsoft has included a decent antimalware tool with Windows 10 called Defender.

If you want another tool, my recommendation is Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware. I have used it and got positive results.

The ostentatious feature that makes it such an excellent Downloader is its download speed. It is experienced that downloading using an Internet download manager is much faster than its competitors.

Other than this, Internet Download Manager gives you a plethora of reasons to choose it among its competitors.

It is because, with IDM, you can limit your download speed, you can even grab a full website and it’s data using its website grabber. One can schedule the downloads; you can integrate it with different browsers.

On a personal note, the feature that made me fall in love with Internet Download Manager is its Resume Capability. In many cases, due to unfortunate reasons like network error or power issues, if your connection stops then once it is restarted, you can resume it from the point where you left it off.

The list of features that Internet Download Manager seems to be endless. Multilingual support adds to the glory of it. The recent version includes Windows 10 compatibility.

The official website claims it to be the fastest download accelerator.

How to Create a Separate Data Partition for Windows?

Published

on

It’s always a good practice to keep your documents, files and media stuff in different drives to avoid any chaotic mess. To do so, you may need to know how to partition your hard drive in Windows 7?

Partitioning always helps you to divide your big chunk of storage into smaller drives for better navigation.

So, in this article, we will walk you through the processes required for creating a separate data partition in Windows.

So, let’s get started with how to create a separate data partition for Windows?

How to Create a Separate Data Partition for Windows?

Sometimes, you may need to make some additional drives on your Windows system to keep different data separately. So, from now on in this article, we will tell you about the ways by which you can learn how to repartition a hard drive without formatting partition?

In this section, we will make you aware of the two methods by which you can create a separate data partition for windows. Actually, data partition can be done by two ways. One is by while formatting the drive and the other one requires no formatting.

So, let’s face off the very first method:

Method #1: Partitioning without formatting the drive.

Step #1: If you don’t want any data loss to occur then it is recommended that you should move your data (preferably to an external hard drive). This will save you from any mishappenings while in the process.

In this very first step, you need to get access to the disk management tool which comes inbuilt in the Windows operating system. If you are wondering how to do that, then don’t you worry, just read on.

If you are using Windows 8, then you need to navigate to the bottom left corner of the window and then select disk management from there. You can also use the “Win + X” command and then proceed from there.

If you are using Windows 7, then there is more than one way to do that. One is to go to the start button and type disk management or manage disks at the search field and hit enter.

One other way is to right-click on my computer icon and select “Manage” from the menu which follows. After that, all you require doing is to head to the left pane of the following window and click on the “Disk Management” option which is just below the storage section.

This way you can get access to the Disk management tool in windows.

Well, this step is an easy piece of cake. Some complex things are coming your way, brace yourself, folks. Kidding, we will be making things simpler for you. So, for further proceeding, kindly move on to the next steps.

Step #2: Now, in this step, you need to click on the drive from which you want to make the partition. A key thing to take a note that you must have enough free space so that you can create a partition out of it. To do so, all you need to do is to right-click on the selected drive and from the menu which follows; you need to select the “Shrink Volume” option.

This will take some time querying volume for available space.

Once you have the next window in front of you, then you are requested to move on to the next step in order to see what to do next?

Step #3: After executing the previous step, you would have a new window that will ask you to enter the amount of size you want to allocate to the new partition.

Remember that, the allocated space needed to be in MB (MegaBytes). So, in case if you want to allocate 50 GB to the new partition so, you need to enter 50000 MB. As simple as that.

You need to enter that amount in the appropriate field next to the “Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB” text.

Once you are done with it, then you can now hit the “Shrink” button. This will take some moments to process, and once it is done, you will have the desired amount of unallocated space in which you have shrunk from the existing partition.

Step #4: In this step, you require right-clicking on the unallocated space and then selecting the first option which is “new simple volume.” This will take you to a wizard on which you have to assign a special drive letter. For example, “C.” You are also provided with a couple of other options, but this is enough to get you going.

Once you are done through the mentioned, then all you need to do is to click on the Next button, and this will give you a new partition. This is how it can be done in this way.

Method 2: While installing windows.

This is by far the most preferable and best method. In this method, we make partitions while installing the windows itself. The process is quite easy.

All that you need to do is to follow your usual process of installing the windows. Once you have reached the point where you are asked to do the partitions, then you need to select a “new column” and then enter the disk size.

Now, follow the onscreen instructions to finish the process of installing the windows and you are done. We won’t be discussing this in detail as it involves showing you the process of installing the windows also.
