How to Become a Blogger?

How-to-become-a-blogger

This couldn't get any better, I mean this exactly is the kind of topic I can write the whole day on, and still not feel tired. So yeah let’s talk a bit about the mechanism and manufacturing infrastructure that makes a man, into a blogger.Well straight and simple, what I’m sharing in this piece is how to become a blogger.

Well I have been 6 long years in the industry, meaning I have been in this industry since I was 13, so yeah I think even if have not collected anything else I did collect what a blogger means.

Who is a Blogger?

Hey, ever wondered who is a blogger exactly? I mean as the name suggests, anyone who blogs, is a blogger right? Well yes, but no.

There are two typical categories of blogger, I mean two categories I can broadly classify the bloggers into.

The first one of course is hobbyist blogger, well meaning blogger who owns blog just for the sake of their hobby and that they are not looking into making any serious profit out of it.

You might be a travel guy and you might want to share your story out with the world, well you are a blogger, you might be a cook and you would want to share your recipes with the world well you are a blogger again, but well there is a difference between you and the professional blogger.

A professional blogger is a blogger who takes it up as a profession, and he makes a living out of blogging. (well all the stories you heard about working and earning from home, they were not fairy tales, not all of them atleast.)

Well, people often confuse professional bloggers with people who are masters in a field, I mean you can be a hobbyist blogger, and you still might be a master in what you share. If you are a great cook you can share your secret recipes and you need not be a professional blogger.

On the other hand on a daily basis, I meet at least a couple guys who seem to try to take blogging as a profession, but they are not masters on the topics they are covering so well it's clear that you don't need to be a master in something to be a professional blogger.

But well yeah then again comes the difference of maintaining the blog and professionalism, I mean if you are just a hobbyist blogger you would not give a lot of shit to search engine queries, keywords or how your blog looks like.

Yeah you might do it on a personal level but that is not something you would spend a fortune on,  on the other hand if you are a professional blogger you do need to worry about Search Engine Optimisation, look and feel of your design, the speed, and a lot of back-end stuff like the themes, the plugins, the CDN’s, etc.

so I can say that the hobbyist blogger is a lot cheaper than being a professional blogger but then again being obvious blogger doesn't pay you while being a professional blogger can make you a fortune.

How to Become a Blogger?

Well becoming a blogger is not really that hard, becoming a professional blogger is. Well, they all start from the same originating point.

So either you want to be a professional blogger, or a just a hobbyist, there are couple things you're going to need for sure, there's no other way around them.

Well let me list the basic requirements (No, they don't cost a fortune!)

  • Domain. (Something so that your visitors can find you, for e.g.,. Knowledgecage.com)
  • A server (In order to store the files, the text, audio-video needs a place to be uploaded, right?)
  • A CMS :- WordPress or Blogger. (Both are totally free.)
  • What? Looking for the fourth requirement? You're good to go, nothing else required! (I just like to play around a bit you know, sorry if it annoyed you.)

How do You Start a Blog?

Well as I already said, you're going to need the two things we talked about. Well, I'll be soon (Like maybe in the next 48hours), writing a detailed guide on how to buy a domain name, but for now let's give you a sneak-peek, and well that should be enough to get you started for now.

You need a domain, and that you can get from Godaddy, or Bigrock. Well, the pricings are similar, not a lot of difference, so you can go with either one of them.

Just head over there, key in your Domain URL. (I'll be taking Godaddy for an example.) Now click on Search.

How-to-become-a-blogger

If the domain is available, you'll see it's available, so just proceed. If it says it isn't available, just think of a different URL. So well see my domain is available, Now, I just click on Select, and then Proceed to cart.

How-to-become-a-blogger

Then finally, you need to click on Proceed to checkout.

How-to-become-a-blogger

Once that's done, you've got your domain, yeah that was all that you had to do.

Okay so now you need to get the servers , well it's just as easy as getting the Domain, you can get one from Bluehost, or Hostgator or any other company you prefer.

Just go to Bluehost and select your plan.(See? They're dirt cheap).

How-to-become-a-blogger

Well once you've got your plan, just proceed to payout and make the payment. (I'm not listing out a step by step process mainly because this is a “how to be a blogger” oriented post, and not it's technicalities, and secondly because buying this is easier then buying goods off Amazon)

Once that's done you're good with the servers too.

So now, all you need is WordPress, right? Well it's easier then most people thing, and WordPress is advanced enough, so all you need to do is, search for Softaculous on your Cpanel (Softaculous is the “home” of all apps and CMS's on the cpanel).

How-to-become-a-blogger

And then, find WordPress in it, and click install.

How-to-become-a-blogger

Done! Well yeah, your site is ready. Now you can just login to your WordPress and start writing new posts, by clicking on Add new from the dashboard.

How-to-become-a-blogger

Congratulations, the blogger within you was just born!

How to Start a Blog for Free on Blogger:-

You can go with Blogger Blogs too, they are free, means well they don't need servers, so all you'd need to buy are the domains.

They are owned and operated by Google, so well there are quite a number of restrictions, that's the reason this is not my first choice, but still you're free to go with them.

All you need to do is, head over to blogger.com and signup for a free account. Or if you have a Gmail ID, you can just login.

How-to-become-a-blogger

Then click on New blog option.

How-to-become-a-blogger

On the popup that comes over, select your Blog Title, and URL.

How-to-become-a-blogger

Once you've done that, your blog is ready! Just click on the small pen icon on the screen to start blogging!

How to Make Money Blogging?

Well, there are over 50 ways to make money off a blog. But well not all of them are as easy, or straightforward. So let me make it easy for you.

Adsense: – Well it's the most popular method right now to make money. All you have to do is, setup Adsense on your blog, and you get paid for everytime a user clicks on it.

Affiliate Marketing: – Well, it's like you can write reviews and promote someone else's products. Like maybe an e-book, a digital software or something, and you get paid a % of it for each sale.

Third Party Ads: –  You can sign up on sites like Buysellads.com (It's the only one I've ever used), what they do is, they connect you with advertisers, who want their banners advertised.

You put them up on your site, and you get paid for a certain number of impressions. Say you get paid $100/10000 impressions or something like that, so yeah that's how it works.

These aren't all the methods, I'm pretty sure you can think of a lot more ideas and methods to make money off your blog, but these are the ones who've made a reputation for them in the industry, can be trusted, and yield results.

How to Edit WordPress htaccess File?

Published

on

WordPress, is the most popular Blogging CMS in the world as of now. It powers more then 25% of the total world websites! Now that, is a huge, huge number. And that also is the reason why I'm writing this piece on How to edit WordPress htaccess file.

Well, before you actually jump in and start pondering over How to Create and Edit WordPress .htaccess file or where is .htaccess file, let me make couple things clear.

See Also: How to customize WordPress themes?

I don't want you messing with something you're not sure about, so let's get sure about what exactly is the .htaccess WordPress file, right?

What is WordPress .htaccess File:-

.htaccess is the file responsible for manipulating how the Apache server handles any changes in configuration of your WordPress CMS. So now you'd be asking, What do “changes” and “configuration” exactly mean, right?

So well, your WordPress is based out of a Permalink structure, isn't it? And someone needs to handle how those permalinks would come into being, right? That's what .htaccess does, it manipulates and changes and does whatever is needed to keep the pretty permalink structure of your WordPress stable and running.

That, sounded a bit complicated, huh? Well let me give you an “English version” of what .htaccess file can do for you:-

  • It can Protect your Admin Area!
  • It can even put in a Password Protection for your WordPress Folders!
  • Lets you hide backlinks and do some other magical tricks that might not be possible, or at least seem possible without it.
  • It has the power to hide / disable your directory from being browsed. Meaning your inner system files and stuff.
  • Wpconfig.php is one of the most important files to your WordPress blog, and well it can protect it!
  • Oh, and you can't forget that it allows you 301 redirecting your blog in case you ever need it.
  • It can even help you banning someone from checking your blog out.

htaccess file for WordPress is often ignored, most webmasters don't even use it to it's full potential and instead waste thousands of dollars on third-party tools and plugins.

While all of those tweaks and tricks and little magical stuff performed by those tools could have been achieved simply by adding one extra line of code to our .htaccess file! So yeah the potential? It's unlimited!

And some other stuff similar to that. So no doubt you're curious about how to change .htaccess file WordPress, right? Yeah, that's what I'm solving right here. Just keep reading.

The WordPress default htaccess file is located in your Cpanel, under your WordPress Installation. (Don't worry, in the later sections I'm covering How to edit WordPress htaccess file, and there you can checkout the step by step procedure, and it's location! )

How to Use the Pingdom Speed Test Tool?

Published

on

How to Use the Pingdom Speed Test Tool

Site loading speed test is one of the most important tests you could ever perform on your blog if you're serious about it's career. And that's the reason I'm writing this piece on How to Use the Pingdom Speed Test Tool.

Site loading speed is a lot of time confused with a lot of other things. For e.g. most people think “the amount of time taken for a, and that to open” is site speed.

Well, for the users it might be the case. But for Search Engines? Nope, not at all! (I've researched a lot on this exact topic a year back. Hence, all of this is coming through.)

Search Engines takes “site speed” in a very different manner compared to how you or me would judge it, so before getting into the real subject of the article, that's Test Web Loading Speed with Pingdom Tools, let me take you on a ride into some more important, yet unknown small little details. Don't forget to track your visitors and the bounce rate using Google Analytics.

Does Site Speed Affect Search Rankings?

It definitely does. Not directly, but indirectly. (Although some claim it does even directly, but it's not confirmed yet!)

I'm sure the question of “How would Google, an algorithm know how long my site took to load”, right? Well trust me Google right now is a lot more advanced than half the human race combined!

What Site Speed Means for Users and How it Affects Rankings:-

When a user lands on the site, the time taken by the site to load completely is termed as “site speed” by most of us.  And well in a general and broader sense, it's correct.

Now it affects rankings as, if a site takes a long time to load, the user would get frustrated and hit the back button (because well, Google has millions of different sites for him), and that's termed as PogoSticking!

Meaning, when a user comes to a site and hits the back button, it's called pogosticking, and it's a negative indicator for Google that the user didn't find what it was looking for.

And for Google, the one thing that matters most, is User Experience. And it does everything in it's power to increase it. So yeah if a user hits the back button, Google would move your result couple places down in the search results.

Because now Google thinks that your site isn't worth being where it is. So see? A poor site speed isn't exactly what you're hunting for. And that's the reason I'll show you how to perform a Site loading speed test.

Before actually getting into the whole How to Use the Pingdom Speed Test Tool thing, let me tell you what Pingdom in itself is.

What is Pingdom?

How-to-Use-the-Pingdom-Speed-Test-Tool

Pingdom is an automated Pinging tool, a tool that pings your site and gets its results and reports to you.

Not just speed! Pingdom also has the features to:-

  • Monitor Uptime: – Meaning, if your site ever goes down. It lets you know.
  • Alert Manager: –Well this neatly crafted algorithm sends you an alert message, and it's pretty advanced as it sends messages only to those people who should be receiving it.

For e.g.,. If there's a speed problem, it'll send the message to the guy who's managing your Site speed, and for downtime, it'll send it to the guy managing your Uptime-downtime thing.

See Also: How to Fully Backup My Site?

You can assign the people their roles inside Pingdom! So yeah see the reason for me adding the “advanced” thing in it?

  • Page Speed: – This is the tool I suppose you're here for. Well, it's a simple tool that calculates your site speed, shows it to you and not just that also provides suggestions to improve it!

How to Use the Pingdom Speed Test Tool:-

Well, the best thing about Pingdom is that, it's free! Atleast the speed test tool is!

So all you have to do is, head over to the speed test tool from Pingdom. Page.

Once you're there, you'll get a beautifully placed box at the center of the screen. So just enter your SITE URL over there and click on test.

How-to-Use-the-Pingdom-Speed-Test-Tool

In around 2-3 seconds you'd get the results on the page! Here's how to analyze them:-

  • Perf. Grade: – It's the overall performance grade of your URL. The higher it is, the better.
  • Requests: – That's the number of server requests your URL did before returning the page. The lower,  the better.
  • Load Time: – I don't think I need to spell this out for you, but yeah the lower your load time is, the better it is for you.
  • Page Size:- Ofcourse you know, the higher the page size is, the longer it would take to load. So well, yeah just reduce the page size.

Well, that's just one box! Telling you all of this. If you scroll down a bit, you'd get a waterfall section. What this section does is, it shows you the exact number of requests, each element of the page consumed!

How-to-Use-the-Pingdom-Speed-Test-Tool

There's a second tab, that's titled Performance Grade! Well, your page is made up of lot's of different elements, right?

The Javascript, the CSS, the HTML and what not! So what Performance grade for you does when it comes to site loading speed test is, it breaks down “individual performances” of those elements!

How-to-Use-the-Pingdom-Speed-Test-Tool

That's a lot of data to work with. You just optimize, improve and analyze your elements and just boost your SERP's with this one site loading speed test!

Server Response Codes: – The third tab, that's the Page Analysis tabs gets you a detailed analysis into the Server response codes of your site!

Well, what it means is, your site is not just your domain, right? A lot of third-party plugins, images, and stuff are used on it. So what it does is, it gets you the response code, performance and resource consumption report of those third-party domains compared to your URL!

How-to-Use-the-Pingdom-Speed-Test-Tool

I know it sounds complicated, but you'd figure it out once you're on the page.  And then, you can probably just delete, (or improve if you want to) the third-party plugins and modules that are consuming a lot of resources.

And to top it all up, there's even a history section! Yeah, it shows you how your site was performing in the past!

How-to-Use-the-Pingdom-Speed-Test-Tool

Now that's one hell of a thing because it shouts out to me when exactly (along with the date) was my site at it's best. Then I can just go back to the theme, plugin or whatever Optimization I was on back then.

And it would get my site it's speed back, won't it?

Final Words:-

So yeah that's a lot of FREE stuff to get your hands on, right? I'm guessing this piece should've answered to your “How to Use the Pingdom Speed Test Tool,” right? Yeah hoped so. Just in case, you wanted to check the wifi speed, here you can see how to test wifi speed?

There are a lot of times when you may need to move your site from one server to another, in that case, before doing anything, it is important to take backup of the website. Here is how to fully backup your site.

But If I still missed something out, feel free to let me know. Or just pour in your thoughts in the comment box!
